Ethical is a funny word, it means different things to different people. To me, it means doing right by people. Honest wage for honest work, a fair price and good service. I believe that if you are ethical in what you do and how you treat people, the rest will follow. Maybe that’s naive but it’s how I was raised and I won’t become jaded by business.

Why?

My name is Jennifer, the owner of The Refinery; I’m also a mom, wife, stepmom, ex-wife, stylist, boss, mentor (I hope), sister, daughter, pet owner, homeowner, tenant, client, patient… I’m a lot of things to a lot of people but I’m just a person like you. I have dreams and goals and responsibilities and I want to be the kind of person my kids can look up to.

What does that mean?

I want clients to pay a fair price, receive the highest quality of services and a luxury experience so that they enjoy their time at The Refinery and return time and again. I want my stylists to learn and grow in their careers, to have goals of their own that they can achieve through education and mentorship.

I also want them to be paid what they’re worth; as skilled Journeymen trades-people, they have spent tens-of-thousands of dollars and dedicated years to their training. Which doesn’t stop once they obtain their licence, it continues year after year so that they stay current on the latest trends and techniques.

What is a Beauty Budget?

We understand that everyone has a budget, especially now! We budget for our food, shelter, clothing, even entertainment, but who budgets for their hair or esthetics? At The Refinery, we want to respect your budget and stay within it. We don’t have the right to spend your money for you or assume you can’t afford something.

We want to work with you so that you can achieve what you’re looking for within your Beauty Budget. Or as close to it as possible! Your expectations may not align with your budget but we can help you understand how some services can be used “in-between” to get more longevity out of your style.

How do we do that?

The first thing we like to do with any client is an in-depth consultation. This isn’t limited to what you want your hair to look like at the end of your appointment. It includes conversations about your health, how much effort you want to put into styling your hair and how often you wash it, what products do you use (no judgement) and finally, what’s your budget?

We use a pricing system that takes the mystery out of the cost of your hair appointment. Most of our services are priced on a cost per hour basis.* It doesn’t matter if you are having colour or highlights, if your hair needs a deep conditioning treatment, if it’s long, short, thick, thin. If you need more, you’ll be there longer and the cost will reflect that and vice versa!

$80.00 per hour for a Journeyman & $70.00 per hour for an Apprentice

*There are a couple of exceptions. We have a few express services that are specifically designed as “in-between” options that will help us to manage your budget and get the most out of your investment. There is also one “luxury” service. Hair Botox, a keratin smoothing treatment, uses products that are dramatically more expensive (5X’s more actually) than with other services. For this reason, the service is still charged at the hourly rate, but the product is added separately per ounce used.
